I can agree with the/your idea to add a “standard” API and for data forwarding or trigger/notifications (for complex functions) and reduce the app to the basic functions (app should be small, reliable, straight and bugfree).
Regarding the API, as I understand the beta app is already using Android Intents (which can trigger tasker). But both are only available for Android devices. From my understanding, it’s not a good idea to have different methods for Android, IOS. For compatibly reasons, a (future) “extension” which is using the API, should be work at all systems in the same way.
