Just an update, It looks like if I have wifi, bluetooth and location services on, I can connect to the mooshimeter through the app only (not by pairing it through the native bluetooth services because it asks for a pin). I discovered this by reading a thread with similar issues with 3rd party GPS trackers and fitbit.
